Community R-VI Board of Education Update April 2009
The Community R-VI Board of Education met in Regular Session on Tuesday, April 21, 2009. The Board reviewed and certified the election results from all four counties for Board of Education Director. Scott Sims and Tresa Hodges took the oath of office. The Board elected President-Tresa Hodges, Vice-President-Andrew Fairchild, and Treasurer-Chris Bohr. The Board approved the agenda and the following consent items: the minutes of the Regular Board of Education Meeting held on March 17, 2009, the transfer from the general fund to the teacher's fund to cover monthly expenditures, and the Nurse's Report for April. The Board approved the addition of Laura Shaw to the district substitute teacher list.
The Board reviewed and approved the following District Evaluations:

2. Mission/Philosophy/Goals
3. Library Media Center
The Board accepted the resignations of Elementary Counselor Teresa Finder and Jane Summers. Both are retiring from careers in education.
The Board voted to give the MOSIP Board of Directors our proxy to vote at the spring meeting.
The Board approved payment of April 2009 bills.
Board President Tresa Hodges read a thank-you note from the family of Nancy Hale.
Superintendent Arlen Provancha provided information from Achitechnics regarding the ongoing renovation. Mr. Provancha commended Warren Hale for his twelve years of service on the Community R-VI Board of Education.
The Board reviewed and approved the list of 2009 graduates.
Superintendent Arlen Provancha provided the monthly transportation report and the updated Technology Plan. The Board approved the updated Technology Plan.
Elementary Principal Natalie Gibson provided elementary attendance and enrollment. Mrs. Gibson has sent letters home to parents encouraging summer school participation especially for students who might be struggling. Elementary Summer School theme this year is Camp Learn a Lot. Elementary M.A. P. testing will be completed tomorrow and has gone very well; Mrs. Gibson gave kudos to Elementary Counselor Teresa Finder. The A+ Learning Program is being used with good results.
Samantha Thomasson and Chance Evans reported on the Envirothon they recently attended. Middle School/High School Principal Steven Wolf reported the Quiz Bowl Team placed second in district competition. Chris Becker and Evan Cook were named to the All-District Academic Team. Samantha Schafer and Max Miller received State FFA Proficiency Awards and Samantha earned a gold medal for her record book. Rachel Bertels and Rachel Gastler received their State FFA Degree. Middle School is finishing up M.A.P. testing. Middle School staff has done an outstanding job during the M.A.P. testing. The End of Course Exams have begun in the high school. Weather has interfered with spring sports, particularly baseball. Parents will be notified if their child will be required to attend summer school for credit recovery.
Dr. Wolf spoke about the Missouri Option Program and the possibility of applying to become a Missouri Option School. The Board voted to pursue submitting a Missouri Option Application.
While in Executive Session, the Board voted to employ the following for extra duty positions: Athletic Director-Jim Brink; Sophomore Class, HS Boys Basketball, Asst HS Girls Softball-James Benson; HS Girl Basketball, MS Girls Basketball, HS Girls Softball-Bob Curtis; Sophomore Class, FBLA, HS Boys Baseball, MS Boys Basketball, Asst HS Boys Basketball-Michael Boedeker; Asst HS Girls Basketball-Holly Gemes; MS and HS Track-Bob Fischer; MS and HS Cheerleading-Nicki Poindexter; NHS, MS and HS Golf-Vicki Briggs; MS and HS Student Council-Sandy Gastler; Senior Class Sponsor, HS Yearbook, Technology Director-Emma Jaccarino; Pep Band, Marching Band, Drama Club and Play-Rose Wilburn; Academic Quiz Bowl-Pam Hollowood; TREND-Bart Bockenstedt; FCCLA-Mary Ann Burkhalter; FFA-Don Hanson; Vocal Music and Freshmen Class Sponsor-Eva Eikel; Junior Class Sponsor-Melanie Utterback; Senior Class Sponsor, FTA-Karen Scott.
The Board voted to offer continued employment to Family and Consumer Science Teacher Mary Ann Burkhalter. The Board also employed the following individuals: Julia Hunt as an elementary teacher, Patty Pazdera as PK - 8 Counselor, Kate Krattli as a middle school language arts teacher, Jenelle French as 9-12 Counselor and A+ Coordinator, and Matthew Wessel as middle school math/science teacher.
Due to the late hour, the Board tabled the review of non-certified staff.
The next regular Board of Education Meeting will be held on May 19, 2009 at 7 p.m. in the school library.
