Board of Education Meeting Update

The Community R-VI Board of Education met in Regular Session on Tuesday, February 16, 2010.  Tresa Hodges, Board President, called the meeting to order at 7:07 p.m.

The Board voted to approve the meeting agenda.  The Board approved the January 19, 2010 Regular Board of Education Meeting minutes.  The Board approved the transfer from the general fund to the teacher's fund to cover monthly expenditures.  The Board approved the monthly nurse's report.  The Board reviewed and approved the preliminary list of 2010 Summer School class offerings.  Only classes with sufficient enrollments will be offered.  The Board reviewed and approved the At-Risk Program, Gifted Program, and Transportation evaluations.

The Board approved the addition of Lindsey Jerichow, Trista Reeves, and Jina Stuckenschneider to the District substitute teacher list.  The Board approved payment of the February 2010 bills.

Tresa Hodges read thank you notes from Don and Sharon Hanson, Steve and Marcia VanCleave, and Robert Fischer.  There were no presentations, Board comments, or citizens’ comments.

Arlen Provancha, Superintendent, gave an update on the construction project.

The Board voted to approve the 2010-2011 school calendar, of which the starting date is more than 10 days prior to the first Monday in September.  The Board voted to table the auditor bids until the March 2010 meeting, which would allow time for reference checks.

Superintendent Provancha gave the monthly Transportation Report.  The Board voted to amend the 2009-2010 school calendar by adding May 26, 27, and 28 as additional snow days.  The Board decided to hold a planning meeting on Monday, March 8, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. and The Junction in Perry, Missouri.

Natalie Gibson, elementary principal, presented the elementary attendance report.  She gave a recap of the Powerful Learning Conference (PLC).  She and Missy Carter, third grade teacher, are the elementary school team.  Mrs. Gibson reported she will reward students who achieve an Advanced or Proficient score, or a 10 point gain, on the Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) test a Cardinals baseball ticket.  Mrs. Gibson invited the Board members to attend the MAP Recognition Night, which will be held March 11, 2010.

Mrs. Gibson announced there will be an A&B Field Trip on Tuesday, February 23, 2010.  Students will visit the University of Missouri Art Gallery to see the Famous Missouri People exhibit.  Third through sixth graders are allowed to attend.  Lastly, Mrs. Gibson announced the Missouri Association of Elementary School Principals (MAESP) conference will be held March 13-16, 2010 at Tan-Tar-A.  She will be honored at the Monday night banquet with the Exemplary New Principal Award.

Steven Wolf, secondary principal, provided the middle/high school attendance report.  Dr. Wolf presented data on the credit recovery class and the In School Suspension (ISS) tardy report.

Dr. Wolf presented the first semester Honor Roll.  He gave an update on the PLC Conference and his team.  He noted Matt Wessel, middle school math and science teacher, will install a weather station so that students may collect weather data for summation purposes.  Dr. Wolf stated A+ Learning Systems (ALS) software is being used to help students with lower grades.

Dr. Wolf commended the Varsity and Junior Varsity Girls Softball team on their Missouri State High School Athletic Association (MSHSAA) recognition for a 3.25 cumulative grade point average (GPA).  Dr. Wolf announced MSHSAA has classified the high school as an II A school.

Dr. Wolf announced the District has been accepted into the University of Missouri Physics First Program.  Melanie Utterback, secondary school science teacher, has been selected as the District’s Physics First representative.  The program is a two year cohort program.  The program is geared toward working with secondary students beginning their freshman year.

Dr. Wolf stated MAP test preparation has started in the secondary schools.  The MAP tests will be given at the end of April.  He will use Cardinal baseball tickets as end of course (EOC) and MAP test incentives.  Letters have been sent to parents explaining this incentive.

He gave a report on the Future Farmers of America (FFA) program.  The FFA Breakfast will be held February 25, 2010 from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m.  The Board voted to accept the sequence of Agriculture classes as presented and to offer Agriculture Construction instead of Agriculture Explorer.

Dr. Wolf announced the Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) State Leadership Conference will be held March 21-23, 2010 in Columbia, Missouri.  Four high school students will attend the conference.

At 8:30 p.m., the Board voted to move into Executive Session.  The Board approved the January 19, 2010 Executive Session minutes.  The Board voted to hire James Benson as the assistant baseball coach.  At 8:45 p.m., Superintendent Arlen Provancha dismissed building principals.

Mr. Provancha presented the elementary and secondary principals’ evaluations.  He recommended a contract be extended to both the elementary and secondary principals.  The Board voted to offer Natalie Gibson, elementary principal, a contract for the 2010-2011 school year.  The Board voted not to offer Steven Wolf, secondary principal, a contract for the 2010-2011 school year.

At 10:08 p.m., the Board voted to return to Regular Session.  Superintendent Provancha presented Cathy Gieseker with a plaque for three years of dedicated service to the District as a Board member.  At 10:10 p.m., the Board voted to adjourn the meeting.
