Community R-VI Board of Education Update-February
The Community R-VI Board of Education met in Regular Session on Tuesday February 19, 2008.

The Board approved the amended agenda and the following consent items: the minutes of the Regular Session held January 15, 2008, the transfer from the general fund to the teacher's fund to cover monthly expenditures, and the Nurse’s Report for February.

The Board reviewed and approved the evaluations for: Transportation, Gifted Program, At-Risk, and Vocational Programs.

The Board reviewed and approved the proposed calendar for the 2008-2009 school year. The Board approved the addition of Latisha Gwen Porter to the substitute teacher list and accepted the resignation of Middle School/High School Principal Jacob Moss.

The Board approved payment of February 2008 bills.

Board President Warren Hale read thank you notes from Melanie Utterback and Kathy Borgmeyer.

Preschool Teacher Bonnie Wilson demonstrated science projects used by the preschool and provided information the preschool teachers obtained at the Steve Spangler Science Workshop.

The Board voted to continue to employ Teri Goldman as its legal counsel for special education matters and authorize the transfer of the district’s files to Mickes Goldman LLC.

Superintendent Arlen Provancha provided the monthly Transportation Report and preliminary 2008-2009 budget figures.

Elementary Principal Natalie Gibson provided elementary attendance and enrollment. Mrs. Gibson spoke about 2008 Summer School classes and provided information about Positive Behavior Support. P.B.S. is a behavior program, which includes PK-5 (or even PK-12) and uses the same behavior modification plan for all the students.

The Board voted to hold the 2008 Summer School Program and approved the district implementation of the Positive Behavior Support program.

Middle School/High School Principal Jake Moss provided middle school/high school attendance and enrollment. Mr. Moss acknowledged Paige Harris, for receiving district level recognition through the MSHSAA Sportsmanship Essay Contest, and Kimberlee Gieseker, Kaleb Harris, and Larin Fielder for placing 1st, 2nd, and 3rd respectively in the VFW Essay Contest on the local level. Kimberlee Gieseker also placed second in the District VFW Essay Contest.

The Board approved a fundraiser request (selling candy) from music department teachers Rose Wilburn and Eva Eikel.

Mr. Moss spoke about two grants the district is planning to apply for. Technology Director Emma Jaccarino is working on a METS/eMINTS Grant application and Business Teacher Michael Boedeker is working on a Vocational Enhancement Grant application. Mr. Moss talked about a computer based learning system, which goes hand in hand with the A+ Program and helps students with credit recovery called A+ Learning System.

The Board voted to employ Trish Cuno as a classroom aide.

The Board voted unanimously to offer re-employment to Elementary Principal Natalie Gibson for the 2008-2009 school year.

The next regular Board of Education Meeting will be held March 18, 2008 at 7 p.m. in the school library.
