Community R-VI Board of Education Update June 2009

The Community R-VI Board of Education met in Regular Session on Tuesday, June 16, 2009.  The Board approved the agenda, the minutes of the Regular Board of Education Meeting held on May 19, 2009 and the transfer from the general fund to the teacher's fund to cover monthly expenditures.

The Board set the Annual Tax Rate Hearing for Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at 7:00 p.m., with the regular Board meeting to follow.

The Board approved the summer school bus routes.  The Board approved all necessary transfers, including the allowed transportation transfer, as well as amended the budget to equal actual expenditures and revenues at the end of the fiscal year.
 
The Board approved soliciting bids for dairy products, bakery products, and fuel and lubricants.  The Board granted the right-of-way easement for Consolidated Electric so they can install the new electrical pad mounted transformer for the renovation project.

The Board approved Arlen Provancha and Steven Wolf as District Safety Coordinators.  The Board accepted the resignation of Special Education Teacher Glenda Norton and Cheerleading Sponsor Nicole Poindexter.

The Board approved the payment of June 2009 bills.


The Board recognized Emma Jaccarino and Glenda Norton upon their retirement.  Mrs. Norton has 31 years in education and 16 years at Community R-VI. Mrs. Norton is an outstanding Special Education Teacher and will be missed by the district.  Mrs. Jaccarino has been with the Community R-VI School District for 27 years. While working in this district she has written technology grants, which were funded for over a million dollars. 

Board President Tresa Hodges read thank you notes from Gayle Madsen, Kathy Borgmeyer, Kerry Dubbert, and Sonja Sommer.

Superintendent Arlen Provancha presented information about the ongoing construction project. 

The Board voted to approve the budget for the 2009-2010 school year. 

The Board voted to enter into a contract for 2500 gallons of propane with Service and Supply Coop for the 2009-2010 school year.

The Board reviewed a letter from Head Start regarding the use of the school owned house for a birth through 3 years day-care center.  Head Start is proposing to use the house rent-free and will pay for any costs related to necessary renovations.   The Board voted to pursue the possibility of allowing Head Start using the school house.
 
Superintendent Arlen Provancha provided the monthly transportation report.  There was discussion about bus driver use of cell phone.  Superintendent Provancha thanked Sherri Deimeke for her 11 years of outstanding service to the Community R-VI School District as the superintendent's and Board of Education Secretary.

The Board reviewed the elementary attendance and enrollment report. Mr. Provancha reported Elementary Principal Natalie Gibson has been interviewing candidates for the elementary special education position.

Middle School/High School Principal Steve Wolf provided attendance and enrollment for grades 6 – 12.  Dr. Wolf is in the process of establishing cell phone usage policy; he provided the cell phone policies from four area schools.  He discussed the progress on the A+ Scholarship Program.  The coaches meeting held in late May was successful; the coaches have expressed an interest in applying to become a Missouri State High School Athletic Association (MSHSAA) Leadership School.  Dr. Wolf reported on those student in Summer School for Credit Recovery.  As of June 15, there were 7 middle school students who have successfully completed their work and 6 high school student who have earned back credit. Dr. Wolf will be the 2009-2010 Eastern Missouri Conference President.  There may not be a cross country team for the fall 2009.  Dr. Wolf will have the student handbook, middle school/high school handbook and an activities handbook ready for the July meeting.  The horticulture summer school classes helped repair the fence around the field and are working on the memory garden.

While in Executive Session the Board voted to employ Christy Dry as the elementary secretary and Carol Benskin as the superintendent’s secretary.  The Board appointed Carol Benskin as the Board of Education Secretary and Custodian of the Records for the district.  The Board voted to employ Darla Deimeke as the Art Club Sponsor.

The next regular Board of Education Meeting will be held in the school library on July 21, 2009 at 7 p.m.
